John Sinclair at Extravaganja

Perhaps the most famous speaker at the 2011 Extravaganja on the South Common of Amherst on April 16 was John Sinclair. Sinclair, a poet, founding member of the White Panthers Party; most famed for his 1969 arrest and trial in Michigan when he was sentenced to ten years in prison for possesion of two joints.

The verdict and sentence sparked widespread outrage, including from such musical luminaries as Stevie Wonder and Frank Zappa. It also inspired John Lennon to write the song “Ten for two”.

More Extravaganja coverage to come soon.
